I’ve started the challenge 30 Days 30 Lipsticks.
A bit of fun to have on Instagram and it also makes me pick my lipstick more carefully when I’m getting ready for the day. And so you ask, who gives a toss what lipstick you wear? It’s only make-up.* Talk about something worthwhile?! Well, I’m actually going to talk about lipstick and it’s direct link to confidence and how the colour lipstick you wear can determine how people perceive you. For example:
I’ve wrote before how lipstick gives me immediate confidence. I can go out running errands with a slick of MAC Lady Danger and nothing else on my face and I’d feel like I could rule the world. Maybe that’s just me, but I don’t think it is.
The Sunday Times Style Magazine recently reported that Net-A-Porter have discovered 15% of shoe orders on their website are placed with a lipstick. The most popular choice being the Isabel Marant wedge trainer retailing at £440 with the Ilia Lip Conditioner in Bang Bang (£22). Shoes and lipsticks; the power couple. And ladies, we’ve known of this couple for a long time.
Women know that a bold lip can change your attitude for the day. Alexa Chung once said that if you’re tired after a long night (read: hungover) to wear red lipstick because people will look at your lips and not your eyes. Lips attract attention. And you change the type of attention you receive by changing your lip colour. Red is seen as sexy, glossy pinks are seen as playful, nudes are chic.
And the thing is, above all, lipstick is fun. It’s playful and brings us back to the days of our childhood when we played with our Mother’s make-up and got it everywhere but our lips and ended up looking like Ronald McDonald. Most importantly, lipstick makes a woman feel sexy. Hints of old school glamour rise when you apply a red lip when, for a second when the light hits you the right way whilst holding your favourite selfie pose, youcould have been a modern day Marilyn Monroe or Jackie O.
And for those who say “It’s only make-up.”? Yeah. It’s only a billion dollar industry (a billion dollars is SO funny) that has existed since the dawn of time when we had Queen Cleopatra squishing red berries to apply to her lips & charcoal to her eyelids.
So if it’s good enough for Queen Cleo, it’s good enough for me.
Long Live the Lippie.
I haven’t blogged an outfit post in forever so of course I picked a FREEZING day to stand around and take a few snaps. My giant black cardigan with REMOVABLE fur (love that feature) from River Island keeps me snug and doubles up as a scarf during these cold days. I bought this check playsuit about two years ago and recently found it stashed in my sisters wardrobe. Really like the peter pan collar detail and the mash of colours. Check has been seen from New York to Milan at their fashion weeks over the last month so I’ll be incorporating this piece into my wardrobe a bit more by means of layering.
A also applied some of my new YSL pink lipstick that I was gifted recently. The colour pigment is strong and longlasting, smooth to apply and smells delicious.
I’ve never been bitten by the Guess bug. I associated it for a long time as a sign you had been to America if you owned a Guess bag. J1 students would return from their summers in Cape Cod with Guess buckled bags hanging from their arms. Yummy Mummy’s who flew to New York to shop in Macy’s sported them in the front of their trolleys at the supermarket. Yet I never wanted one. The big G buckle never attracted me and those handbags wouldn’t fit my life in them.
Then, for my 21st birthday, my friends returned from their J1 (San Diego FYI) with a hot pink Guess wallet for me. And I loved it. Small and compact, no big gaudy G sign or buckle to be seen. It was shiny and pretty and I slotted my cards and cash in with great enthusiasm. But it wasn’t to be, and after four months I lost it on a night out.
That was the last Guess item I owned; until last summer. I’m a big black boot fan. Buckles, studs, straps, Velcro straps, gold tap top… gimme them all. I’m currently eyeing up a pair of Kurt Geiger’s and I’ve decided they will be mine by the end of the week. So when I laid my eyes upon a studded thick black boot last summer whilst browsing at TJ Maxx for wall fixtures to decorate my room with, I was surprised yet happy that they were in fact Guess and were a steal at $40! (Good ole’ TJ Maxx. TK Maxx equivalent in Ireland.) They are the sturdiest black boot I have ever owned. They’re comfy and hard wearing, water never creeps in and there’s no G buckle anywhere to be seen (a small GUESS inscription on one of the clasps instead). I’ve had them over the half year mark now and they’re scuffed and beaten from all the wear I’ve given them. But I like that look. I’ve a feeling they’re gonna stay a good while with me yet. They’re that kind of boot friend. Guess & I weren’t friends at first, but we’re together for the long haul now.
See what I did there, eh? 😉
